STEM Ambassadors are enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life who want to inspire young people’s curiosity and engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Our STEM Ambassador volunteers range from app designers to meteorologists to healthcare professionals. They come from a vast and diverse range of backgrounds, all using STEM in their occupations or studies. They volunteer a little of their time each year to inspire young people in schools and community groups about STEM subjects and careers.
All ambassadors complete training, including safeguarding, and have an enhanced child workforce DBS.
STEM Ambassadors are fantastic role models and provide a whole range of free services:
talking about their career and the opportunities in their field
being an expert on a topic and answering questions from pupils
adding real-life context to topics through setting challenges or having discussion sessions with young people
demonstrating how they use scientific skills in their jobs
providing challenges, mentoring and judging competitions
being a helping hand for activities or even running their own workshops
The is run by and managed by regional hubs. The Trans-Pennine Hub is managed by the Science Museum Group. Our region is spread across three of our northern museums:
North Yorkshire – National Railway Museum, York
West Yorkshire –
Greater Manchester –
We have a population of over 2,500 STEM Ambassadors across the Trans-Pennine Hub, from a national network of around 33,000 dedicated and inspiring volunteers.

You are welcome to contact us if you need support or would like to chat through any STEM-related ideas you have.
Useful guides for ambassadors
We encourage ambassadors to log any activities they have arranged themselves. It helps us to understand how we can best support you, and understand the reach of the programme—how much support the STEM community is giving to schools and community groups.
